Advocating for a Better Future

Last week I had the pleasure to photograph at an event, hosted by The Cushman Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney called, "The Path from Disaster to Development: Haiti". This event had three speakers, Curtis R. Welling (The CEO of AmeriCares), Ruth W. Messinger (The President of the American Jewish World Service) and Dr. Robert Gore (Emergency Physician and Project Co-Leader of Emedex International).

These three individuals spoke on the development of Haiti, prior to and after the earthquake disaster. Their projects focus on helping Haiti maintain a sustainable plan that will help alleviate the issues and work towards a better future for the country.

Curtis Welling (above right) telling us that billions of dollars go towards the "Relief" of the earthquake, but no one really knows where all that money really goes. If you step into Haiti now and look at it now, it doesn't look any different than it was right after the earthquake that hit in January. 10 months later, and nothing has changed.

Ruth Messinger (above) spoke about her organization. One goal they are working on is currently giving all the women in Haiti flashlights. This will reduce the risks of sexual crimes in Haiti and provide safety. Ruth's organization stresses the promotion of sustainable relief. Relief that will bring about a better future for the Haitian community and also build their economy and focus on parts that will actually make an impact.

Dr. Robert Gore (above), a project leader at Emedex International, tells of how their organization works to train and teach doctors all over Haiti in order to ensure a better future in medics for the country. The lack of doctors in Haiti and the immense need for care is outbalanced, and if they continue to train more and more, the community will be able to help themselves.

There is still much to be done in this developing country. The natural disaster only created a more complicated work space, but hopefully these organizations will create an easier future for Haiti. Hope for the best.
